About the Role

Under the supervision of the Director of Community Development, this position performs professional planning work and provides technical assistance and information to staff and the public related to the implementation and realization of the objectives of the Town’s Municipal Planning Strategy. This position is responsible for undertaking other related planning initiatives, as determined by the Director. Current strategic initiatives of Town Council include the following: Public Transit Expansion, regional growth management, Bridgewater Business Park expansion, infrastructure charges, park activation and improvements, and the Housing Action Plan/Affordable Housing. This role will also assist with the coordination of the 5-year review process of the Town’s planning documents – the Municipal Planning Strategy, Land Use By-law and Subdivision By-law – as required by regulation.

Qualifications: 

Planner 1: The incumbent must possess the following qualifications 

Education: 

  • University degree in Planning, Community Development, or a related field is required. Must have at minimum a Bachelors; Masters or higher degree will be considered an asset. 

  • Eligibility to be licensed as a Professional Planner in Nova Scotia is required.  

Experience: 

  • Previous experience in a professional planning or community development role will be considered an asset. 

  • Work or volunteer experience in community or environmental planning or projects will be considered an asset. 

 

Planner 2: The incumbent must possess the following qualifications 

  • Post-secondary degree in Community/Urban Planning or a related field is required (Master’s level preferred); 

  • Three (3) years of work experience in a professional planning or community development office; 

  • Eligibility to become a Licensed Professional Planner as per the NS Professional Planners Act is required.  

  • Suitable combination of education and experience may be considered; 

  • Ability to demonstrate a general knowledge of municipal government operations is an asset; 

  • GIS mapping experience is an asset. 

 

Terms of Employment

  • 2.5 year Term, full-time position. 

  • Regular hours are Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm (35 hours per week); 

  • Position operates out of the Town’s Community Development Department (60 Pleasant Street); 

  • Salary: Planner I (Grade 4  $69,853- $89,811)   Planner II (Grade 5 $78,451 - $100,865)
