The Town of Bridgewater is currently seeking a Collections Coordinator for the DesBrisay Museum and Wile Carding Mill to join our Team in the Community Development Department.

ABOUT THE ROLE

This role is responsible for the institution’s collection at DesBrisay Museum - both its development and maintenance, interpretation of the collection and assisting with exhibit design where needed. Additionally, this role is responsible for collections maintenance and interpretation at Wile Carding Mill, a Nova Scotia Museum (NSM) site. The Collections Coordinator also responds to incoming research requests and may occasionally assist with programming, volunteers, and events.

QUALIFICATIONS 

Education:

  • Degree in Museum Studies, Information Science, History, relevant discipline; or a combination of relevant training and experience.

Experience: 

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience working in museums and/or archival institutions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of archival theory, including Rules for Archival Description (RAD) and current museum standards.
  • Experience curating and installing museum exhibits.
  • Demonstrated experience working with volunteers.

Skills:

  • Communication and presentation skills.
  • Efficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Teams).
  • Customer service skills.
  • Able to become efficient in Collective Access, Nova Muse, and MemoryNS an asset.
  • Physical and digital organization.
  • Photographing a range of artifacts.
  • Scanning and digitizing archival materials.
  • Conflict resolution.

 

CERTIFICATION:

  • First Aid/CPR (to be provided by employer)
  • WHMIS (to be provided by employer)

 

WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical requirements include standing, walking, climbing stairs, crouching, for extended periods. Exposure to wool fibers, dust, heat, and common cleaning fluids. The museum has minimal climate control and can be frequently hot or cold. Frequent interruptions and requests for information from the public and meeting daily operational needs requires flexibility, patience, teamwork and good communication skills. 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Part-time, casual (approximately 21 hours per week) 
  • $32.47-$41.75 hourly + vacation pay 
  • Work location is DesBrisay Museum and Wile Carding Mill.
  • Work schedule is negotiated with and approved by the Manager
  • Museum is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday.
  • Work outside of regular office hours may be required to meet operational demands.
  • Worksite may contain allergens including pollen, implications of damp, mold spores, or enclosed conditions.
  • Incumbent must be willing to submit to a background check and a vulnerable sector check
