About the Role

The Museum, Coordinator oversees exhibits, guest artists, and curators, and interpretation at both the DesBrisay Museum and Wile Carding Mill Museum. This role works closely with the Collections Coordinator, Museum Interpreters, and the Nova Scotia Museum. The Coordinator plans and delivers museum events, tours, and community programs that highlight Bridgewater’s arts, culture, and heritage. They also recruit and engage volunteers, community members, and partners, including the Nova Scotia Museum and the Association of Nova Scotia Museums, to support cultural initiatives. that honor the past and look toward the future. This position collaborates with local groups and organizations to ensure that everyone in the community has opportunities to explore and celebrate cultural diversity without barriers. 

This position also:

  • Develops exhibits, and interpretation for the collections of both DesBrisay and Wile Carding Mill Museum, in collaboration with the Collections Coordinator, Interpreters, and the Nova Scotia Museum. This includes the development and implementation of interpretive plans for each collection, in alignment with funding requirements. 
  • Responsible for events related to the museum collection, arts, heritage and culture. These include Town-led initiatives as well as those led by community and provincial partners.
  • Develop and implement tours for public and school groups to tell the story of the community through the collection

About You

You have a strong sense of community and the ability to listen to understand other perspectives.  You value diversity and recognize the need for accessible and barrier-free programming to promote the heritage and culture of the local community.  You are passionate about local history, culture and the arts and always plan program and events to ensure that they are open and welcoming to everyone.  You enjoy working with others using a collaborative approach and you foster a team environment.  

Education:  

  • Post secondary education or certification in museum studies, anthropology, education, history, art, communications, or related field.
  • Suitable combination of education and experience providing the required competencies will also be considered. 

Experience:  

  • Two (2) years’ experience working in a museum or arts and culture space.
  • Demonstrated experience creating and implementing cultural programs, exhibits, museum interpretation, and events.
  • Demonstrated experience with program development and implementation.
  • Demonstrated experience with staff or volunteer supervision.
  • Experience with marketing initiatives and content creation in multimedia using a variety of software, such as Canva and Adobe Creative Suite would be an asset.

Certification:

  • First Aid/CPR (to be provided by employer).
  • WHMIS (to be provided by employer).
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion training.
  • Accessibility Training (Rick Hansen, for example) is an asset.
  • Subject to periodic security checks, as involves work with children and seniors.

Terms and Conditions of Employment:

  • Non-union, permanent, full time (35 hours per week).
  • Location office shall be the DesBrisay Museum.
  • Museum is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 1 – 5pm (September – June) and 9am – 5pm (July – August).
  • Work outside of regular office hours is required to meet operational demands.
  • Annual Salary - $59,096 - $75,980 (Grade 3), plus a comprehensive benefits package that includes a defined benefit pension plan.
