About the Role 

Under the supervision of the Recreation and Culture Program Coordinator, the Summer Recreation Manager will be responsible for the planning and implementation of the Bridgewater Recreation Summer Programs and summer staff supervision. 

Key tasks of this role include:

Summer Staff Supervision

  • Assist with the hiring of summer staff.
  • Support and supervise summer staff, including the preparation of a work schedule, weekly meetings, and completion of a mid and end of summer evaluation.
  • Ensure that summer staff are well organized and able to perform their duties.
  • Provide leadership and supervision, when required, at activities and events.
  • Assist with the preparation and implementation of summer staff training opportunities, including pre-season “in house” orientation sessions and the Lunenburg/Queens Summer Staff Leadership Training event.
  • Attend all training opportunities as requested.

Program Planning and Implementation

Support the creation of the Summer Recreation Guide and summer programs with a focus on accessible day camps, free drop-in summer activities, which may include drama, art, sport, nature activities, special events, workshops, and more.

  • Oversee and participate in the implementation of summer programs and services.
  • Develop unstructured play and pop-up park activities.
  • Develop, adhere to, and complete a budget for all summer programs.
  • Ensure that all program supplies and event fees are paid according to department procedures.

Events

  • Plan Fundraising events for PROKids
  • Lead summer staff in design, and build of the TOB entry to the South Shore Exhibition Parade
  • Support with events in collaboration with our community partners, such as Healthy Family Day

Qualifications

  • Individuals should have experience in recreation, health, physical education, visual art, music, theatre, event planning, education or equivalent.
  • One or more years of leading children or youth including program design and implementation.
  • Supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities is an asset.
  • Candidate must be 15–30 years of age and legally entitled to work in Canada such as a permanent Canadian resident, citizen, or refugee. Candidate does not have to be a student.
  • Possession of a valid class 5 Nova Scotia driver’s license is considered an asset but not mandatory.
  • Access to a vehicle is considered an asset but not mandatory.
  • Current certification in CPR-B, Emergency First Aid, Food Handler Course, and WHMIS. Will be provided by the employer.
  • Current criminal records and vulnerable sector checks will be required of the successful candidate if applicable.

Terms of Employment 

  • Wage: $22.00/hr, plus 5.8% vacation pay, less regular statutory deductions 
  • Status: Non-Union, summer position 
  • Hours of Work: Approximately 16 weeks at 35 hours per week. Hours of work are subject to a schedule and include days, evenings, and weekends.
  • This position operates out of Bridgewater Town Hall, The DesBrisay Museum, the Bridgewater Outdoor Pool, and various outdoor locations around the Town of Bridgewater.
