About the Role
The unionized position of Water Facility Operator is a hands-on position involving the operation and maintenance of the Water Facility System consisting of the following major components: Source Water Area, Treatment, and Distribution. The incumbent will be responsible, under the supervision of the Water Facility Supervisor, for the effective and efficient operation of the water facility in accordance with the facility’s operation manual and Approval to Operate.
Responsibilities
- Conduct source water and land use, and lake level and dam operations monitoring;
- Operate plant controls and monitoring system (Automatic with Manual Override);
- Take samples and conduct laboratory testing as required;
- Perform general plant cleaning, systems maintenance, and grounds maintenance;
- Provides water connections and disconnections in response to service orders;
- Respond to customer water complaints and provide customer service;
- Maintain water distribution system and pumping stations;
- Operate and maintain chlorination systems
- Provides emergency on-call services for the water facility as determined by the Water Facility Supervisor;
- Assists in maintaining operational records for the facility in an organized manner; and
- All other related duties as assigned.
Education:
- Successful completion of a two-year technical program related to water treatment is required.
- An equivalent combination of related education and experience in a water treatment and or distribution environment may be considered.
Certificates/Licenses/Registrations:
- The Operator must hold Operator in Training Certification. Additional certifications in Water Treatment and/or Water Distribution are a strong asset.
Class I (or higher) certification in Water Treatment and/or Distribution is preferred - Classification as Facility Operator I, II, III, IV will be based on level of certification, in accordance with the Collective Agreement.
- Must have the ability to obtain Class III Certification in Water Treatment and Class II Certification in Water Distribution from Nova Scotia Environment.
- Must possess a valid class 5 Nova Scotia Driver’s license.
Experience:
- Previous experience related to the position; experience in the operation of a municipal potable water facility is preferred
- Related experience in a municipal field or mechanical/electrical repair/maintenance field is an asset.
- A combination of education and experience may also be considered
Essential Skills:
- Familiarity with water quality testing procedures and equipment.
- Familiarity with Nova Scotia Health and Safety standards, including chemical handling and storage, personal protection requirements and lockout procedures.
- Experience safely operating and maintaining pumps, motors, valves, metering control and chemical feed systems, electrical and plumbing systems and equipment.
- Experience using hand tools, measurement instruments and monitoring automated systems.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Permanent, unionized position in accordance with the CUPE Collective Agreement.
- Wages: $31.46- $37.09, depending on certifications.

- Defined Benefit Pension Plan - PSSP
- Regular hours - Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (40 hours per week).
- Once trained and certified, the incumbent will participate in the on-call rotation.
- Water Facility Personnel are required to work overtime, when necessary, at the applicable overtime rate
- The position requires adherence to a high level of confidentiality.
The Town of Bridgewater compensates Operators based on their level of certification, in accordance with the Collective Agreement with CUPE Local 1092:
