About the Role
The Bus Operator (Casual) is responsible for the safe and effective operation of transit vehicles in the Town of Bridgewater while providing excellent customer service. The Bus Operator operates transit vehicles in accordance with traffic laws and established routes and schedules without compromising safety, assists passengers with boarding and accessibility needs, conducts vehicle inspections, monitors vehicle condition and maintains required records and documentation.
About You
Primary Responsibilities
- Operate vehicle and practice defensive driving techniques while following applicable traffic laws at all times.
- Load passengers onto bus by pulling into designated bus stops and stopping for flagging passengers in designated areas.
- Board and exit people with special needs, including assisting passengers in wheelchairs to get on and off the bus by operating ramps and securing wheelchairs.
- Follow schedule routes and schedule guidelines.
- Monitor speed and time points, and report deviation from schedule to dispatch services.
- Completes and documents pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle and reports any deficiencies in accordance with procedure.
- Implements emergency and evacuation procedures should the need arise.
- Respond to incidents and accidents, seek assistance as required, and complete required documentation.
- Monitor fare collection and advise of Fees Policy and receive, verify fare payment.
- Respond to passenger inquiries.
- Inform passengers of vehicle rules and regulations and enforce as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (required).
- Completion of a defensive driving course (may be supplied by employer).
- A valid Nova Scotia Class 1 or 2 Driver's License (required) and a clean driver's abstract.
- Three (3) years of experience working in a service occupation dealing directly with customers.
- Five (5) years of recent driving experience.
- Driving experience in a public transit environment is an asset.
Terms of Employment
- Casual, as needed for a variety of day, evening, weekend and holiday work.
- $22.54 per hour plus vacation pay.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check and Drivers Abstract.
- Position operates out of the Former Bridgewater Memorial Arena location (123 Empire Street).
